January ´13 Music Box

As I was scrolling through songs that I liked, all I can say is that January was busy! I noticed that there were many songs that I already had forgotten, not in a bad way though- new ones just kept coming in! Anyways here are the tunes, which deserve attention.

1. Pinback - Proceed To Memory

Make sure to watch the video, it's mint.

2. Santigold - Girls

It's quite funny that Finnish band PMMP has a song called Tytöt (=Girls) and a similar video concept. Click here to see it.

3. Telekinesis - Ghosts And Creatures

4. Widowspeak - Thick As Thieves

5. Widowspeak - Locusts

6. Kali Ma - Great Lake (Demo)

7. Baroness - March To The Sea

Tour footage before the bus accident.

8. Gerry & The Pacemakers - You'll Never Walk Alone

Finally a video for this song.

9. French Films - When People Like You Filled The Heavens

10. The Strokes - One Way Trigger

11. fun. - Sight Of The Sun

Probably the band's best song.

12. Crystal Castles - Sad Eyes

13. Shelf Nunny Ft. Briana Kranich - Cause I Had The Time

My favorite of the month, featuring his fiancé. Check out the cool video too.

Top 10 Albums of 2012

I knew it wouldn't be easy to find full albums for you to stream. Legal ones so to speak. But thanks to Bandcamp and musicians' better awareness of music streaming, I'm glad to be able to let you hear these great albums. Though, there are a couple, which you need to stream from fan-made playlists. That's not bad. Bad is when a band uploads all the songs, but don't put them in order.

For me a best album is something, which works as an entity. Not all songs have to be out of this world, but they're linked to each other to comprise a masterpiece. The albums chosen below do just that.

10. Chairlift - Something

9. Crystal Castles - III

8. fun. - Some Nights

7. Team Me - To The Treetops!

6. Reptar - Body Faucet

5. Oberhofer - Time Capsules II

4. Grimes - Visions

3. Polica - Give You The Ghost

2. Amanda Palmer & The Grand Theft Orchestra - Theatre Is Evil

1. Baroness - Yellow & Green

Top 10 Songs of 2012

I can't believe it's this time of the year again. 2012 was (is) a great year of music. Many new discoveries, many comebacks and gems from both indie and mainstream acts. It wasn't easy to narrow the best songs into the top 10 and I'm sure you will disagree with some of the choices. Acts such as Crystal Castles, Amanda Palmer, Baroness and Sleigh Bells were close in being on the list. But taste in music is something that is hard to argue on and I hope to see what your favorite songs of this year were! Let me know in the comments below or on the Facebook page. Enjoy.

10. No Doubt - Settle Down

The most anticipated comeback and they do it with style.

9. Paul Banks - The Base

I seem to never get enough of Banks' voice and The Base is truly one of his best songs.

8. Bloc Party - Kettling

How great is it to have this quartet back? Kettling is my favorite tune of their latest album and the energy level in it is amazing.

7. Willis Earl Beal - Evening's Kiss

Evening's Kiss is something that every Elliott Smith fan is able to feel in their bones.

6. Friends - Mind Control

Today's liberals' anthem.

5. Ellie Goulding - Anything Could Happen

It was either this or Goulding's second single Figure 8. Both are catchy, this is just catchier.

4. Haim- Better Off

Quite a sensation these sisters from LA. I'm betting that their debut will be one of my favorite albums of 2013, maybe even the best.

3. Purity Ring - Fineshrine

I dream to see a Justin Timberlake- liked black and white hip hop choreography video for this song.

2. fun. - We Are Young

Trying to figure out what to say about this song. It's fun to sing along to?

1. Grimes - Oblivion

My favorite song of 2012 was decided an hour ago, when I was compiling this list. I could have chosen any other song from the Visions' album or actually a song from any other artist, who makes more sense. But making sense doesn't matter, when you have a well-crafted electro pop tune. See, even that previous sentence doesn't make sense.

Don't forget to let me know your favorite songs of 2012! Tomorrow the best videos are up!

November's Music Box

November has been exceptionally good. Many female musicians and mainstream pop. Aiming for the Christmas market perhaps?

Haim - Don't Save Me

The second video from the LA sisters. Their debut albums is the one I can't wait to have next year.

Haim - Send Me Down

B-side to Don't Save Me.

Ellie Goulding - Figure 8

Second single from the sophomore. That's 2 out of 2 great pop tunes.

Lana Del Rey - Bel Air

Just as I was thinking what happened to LDR, this video came out. Such a beautiful tune, which I can imagine in Edward Scissorhands.

Ke$ha - Die Young

My friend started to freak out when I told her I really liked this song. It's catchy.

Florence and the Machine - Lover to Lover

This is the second video to the song, which really highlights Florence's amazing voice.

Florence and the Machine: Lover to Lover on Nowness.com.

Zola Jesus - Diamonds

Here's the unique Zola Jesus covering Rihanna.

CSS - I've Seen You Drunk Girl

Brazilian electro rockers poppers bringing it.

Amanda Palmer & The Grand Theft Orchestra - Do It With A Rock Star

Not suitable for children and conservatives.

fiN - Lucky You

Britain's Incubus. I think.

Purity Ring - Lofticries

Not their best song, but worth putting here. Can you figure out the video?

fun. - Sleigh Ride

Ending the list with a Christmas song. I dislike people who dislike Christmas songs. Here's fun.'s version of Sleigh Ride.

October's Music Box

October has been a month of many many releases, of which some aren't that good actually. Well at least at the moment those particular tunes haven't grown on me yet or the videos are just bad, but as they're coming from bands that I adore(d), they need to be included here.

Bloc Party - Kettling

Probably the best song of their latest album, though the video doesn't impress that much, but I get why they did it if I understood the lyrics correctly.

Feed Me & Crystal Fighters - Love Is All I Got

Crystal Fighters are a pretty decent British band, a great live band as well. I've also been in one of their music videos, unfortunately though not in this super hero London party clip.

The xx - Chained

Indie wonder kids are back. Some think the song and video are boring, but naah at least it's beautifully shot. Slow motion always does the trick.

Bon Iver - Beth/Rest

This could be probably the awful song and awful video. But the tune is actually quite good when you get into it despite the 80s love movie vibe. The video on the other hand..UGH. Just stick with the music Justin...

Franco and the Dreadnought - Platt Fields

There's nothing wrong with promoting the artist I work with, especially when Platt Fields is my favorite tune from him, and everything for a good cause.

M83 - Steve McQueen

I was surprisedd M83 released a new video from his album released a year ago. But yeah it's only been a year and Rihanna for example released like almost every track from her albums. Steve McQueen is a great great song.

Paul Banks - Young Again

It's always a joy to hear Paul's voice and the video is so sympathetic!

fun. - Carry On

Completely fell in love with the band at their Helsinki gig and this is the song they started the show with. Inspiring lyrics!

Crystal Castles - Affection

I end this month's music list with a last minute addition. I end it with the best of the month. All you CC fans were probably like *?* when you heard this, no doubt it sounds like electro r n b, so not them, but still so amazing, which is them.

Fun. @ The Circus, Helsinki

September 25th, 2012

Fun at the circus. Unbelievably ungoogleable. Unbelievably amazing.

After attending so many gigs in Amsterdam and especially in London, I did still remember how passionate the Finns could be at gigs. But I thought to myself that this mainly happens at big venue.

What a reality check.

The line in front of the doors was so long that we could have easily had a couple of beers more and not see the difference. I mean what were the odds for many people lining up in front of a night club. The odds were that the main act was the reason for drawing a full crowd.

New York's own rocky poppy fab trio Fun. has done extremely well back home and here too by getting a lot of plays on radio and TV. And apparently their support act Walk The Moon has been doing a pretty good job, even though I haven't heard their music before. But never mind me, when most of the audience were singing to their songs, which made me think that they're probably the first supporters that I've seen to be that well-received. They were like the main act already with that constant screaming from fans.

It continued even when they took their instruments out of the stage. Every single time someone walked pass. Nothing wrong with that though, as they did deliver. Plus the singer had such a nice sweater.

So, when I nearly lost my hearing with almost everyone giving all they got from their lungs, then imagine when Fun. got on stage. Or actually throughout the whole time they were on AND OFF the stage. Through the bloody shrieking I couldn't hear how loud I myself shouted. Usually at gigs people sing along to the most famous songs. There it weren't only the hits, but every single song! I was so amazed, and kept thinking in my mind that in London this could never happen. Before I thought Londoners were dull, now comparing to this they're kind of the living dead at gigs.

Also, you know when pretty much every band says something good about the city they're playing in, and it's most of the time just them pleasing the crowd. At that gig every word they said and every smile were completely sincere. How do we know this? Because even without them saying anything, it could be heard, seen and felt that this is the type of an audience musicians dream to play to.

I was waiting for them to say that we were the best gig they've played so far. Almost! As we were the best in Europe so far, which made me wonder, which crowd in America beats us. Perhaps their families and friends? Please tweet the answer to me!

What surprised me the most was their love for Moomins. Forget Angry Birds, bring on the Moomins bags and stuff! "Helsinki is the shit", they say.

Despite of the show being a high-energy non-stop crazy ride, there was still a moment for calming down. I'm pretty sure many fans got teary eyes at this moment. Like the uploader of the video describes;

Probably the best night of my life. Sorry about the shaking in the beginning, I had to give the camera to my sister because I was too emotional/tired to hold it steady.

Here's a song about singer Nate's parents.

My friend's only comment of the gig "it was so good for the singer's feet to be without shoes". She studies podiatry.

thanks fun. and fellow fun fans for making me deaf and lose my voice. but it was all worth it.

Friday Feature: fun.

Because of living abroad for sometime and therefore not watching TV regularly anymore, I was absolutely shocked to see a band I discovered on an indie music site being played on commercial music channels. I've been meaning to write about that band for a while now, but I have to admit that after noticing them getting some mainstream success I thought of leaving the feature out.

Of which I feel extremely ashamed.

It would have also been a complete musical murder not to feature the alternative rockers/power poppers fun. Based in New York, the band relies on quirky melodies and lyrics, which reminds me of British pop star Mika. On top of that I get a feeling of being preached by a missionary somewhere in Africa with the passion lead man Nate Ruess sings and how the drums are being hit.

You probably might know fun. already from their hit single "We Are Young", which reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100, becoming the first alternative single to reach the chart since Coldplay's "Viva la Vida" in 2008. In addition to their success in the music scene, the band promotes gay rights, which is always a plus when someone with influence uses their voice for good.

I'll definitely try to go see fun. at their Helsinki gig in September; I'm dying to get myself one of their cool band shirts.. In the meanwhile have a listen to their second album "Some Nights" below.
