Top 11 Devil's Rejects of 2011

After listing my top songs and videos of last year, it's time for the final list. And yes I know it's a really bad name, but I couldn't come up with anything better. But basically the Devil's Rejects list is going to consist of tracks, which just in just didn't make it into the main lists, are something that others have shared with me, something that people don't believe I like, extremely catchy or just plain random.

Here they are:

11. iremembertapes. - Gossip
When I started my internship, the first task was to listen to this song. Me and my collegue were doomed for a whole month to instinctly have this on repeat and sing along.

10. EMA - Milkman
The first time I heard her music was when she was supporting Zola Jesus. One of the best support acts I've seen. Milkman is such an energetic rocking song with a cool video. You have to love her awkward dance moves.

9. Lana del Rey - Blue Jeans
First time hearing it, I disliked it. Now 'You fit me better, than my favorite sweater' line is something I find to be genius.

8. Isaac Parker - All I Know (Isaac Parker Remix)
I'm not a huge fan of remixes, but this is bad ass. And apparently it was his first ever remix, should we believe that?

7. Los Campesinos! - By Your Hand
This is one of those songs that have a chorus, which you can imagine everyone singing all together in some rock bar. Sad lyrics, but a fun night out.

6. Red n Pink - Badman
You either love it or hate it. And I looove it. This is one of the few up and coming bands, who actually have their image all figured out. Thumbs up to that, and to the dude in 2:21.

5. Hurts - Sunday
I'm not a fan of the band, but I'm a huge fan of the song. The lyrics and melody are amazing.

4. Emmy The Great & Tim Wheeler - Home For The Holidays
Of course there has to be a Christmas song included in this list! The video is extremely cheesy, but Emma-Lee's awkward clapping in the beginning is ace.

3. Vektroid - Wild Wave
Three words for you: Summer. Skate. Tune.

2. Jimmy Wong - Ching Chong! Asians in the Library Song
Last spring a UCLA student posted a racist video on YouTube, which resulted in her receiving many death threats. And this;

And ladies and gentlemen after many great songs and videos it's time for the number one Devil's Reject of 2011. Some of you will hate me for this and some of you will think that using the devil's reject is in this case 100% compatible.

But there must be something done right, if this song pops into your mind every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Fun, fun, fun, fun.

What were your Devil's Rejects of 2011?

Gnarlloween Critical Mass

28.10.2011

It started in 1992 and now it's celebrated every last Friday of the month in over 300 cities around the world. Hundreds of cyclists gather together to take over the roads, and so do those with boards, skates, anything without a motor. New Yorker described it as 'monthly political-protest rides', but Critical Mass participants have insisted it to be a 'celebration' and social gathering, not an organized demonstration.

Either so, hearing how Critical Mass lasted from 6pm until midnight the previous month, I thought it to be more like taking part in Survivor. I was quite scared of how I'd manage, especially with my grippy wheels. But my goal was to make it til the end.

As it was during Halloween weekend, people had to dress up. Some did follow up the Star Wars theme suggested by someone.

Skating for 4 hours around London was amazing. It felt like being part of a huge family; cyclists were helping out the skaters, when there was bad pavement or if they just wanted to chat. And I'll always remember that moment at a crossing at King's Cross, where people just lifted their bikes and boards up in memory of a cyclist who died on that spot.

For us to have a safe ride, cars were stopped from driving on.

There were so many people filming us with their phones, especially on Oxford Street. At that point we were halfway through the route, and my legs were feeling quite tired already. Sometimes I could hardly stay up; one moment I had difficulties getting on my board that one guy laughed 'look she's so drunk'.

Well, let's have a look at my different moments during that day.

Pre- Critical Mass

Critical Mass

are we done already? no, only half. (shit)high five!

Post- Critical Mass

someone asked me what happened to my head. he was serious.

You can imagine how exhausted we were after kicking for so many hours. And how my left thigh and right calf hurt. Also, I was pretty scared to get out of bed the next morning, and when I finally got up, I noticed that my right ankle was in a pretty bad shape too. I was a zombie that whole day. Got to say that it wasn't like Survivor, it was more like Saw.

Nevertheless I had fun. Or 'fun fun fun fun' like Rebecca Black would say it. I also reached my goal, I didn't give up. Though my common sense was telling me to, but I hardly listen to it anyways. Even now it's telling me to rather take the bike for next week's Mass.

Naa, I got a board to kill.

Orange Goblin album listening session

18.10.2011

The Animal Farm does many things; artist management, songwriting, publishing, singing 'Friday' and producing albums. One of the latest albums produced is Orange Goblin's newest record to be released early next year.

That's why a listening session for that album was held for long-haired music journalists, who dressed mainly in black, were at least three times bigger than me and talked about bands from the 80s, of which I don't know anything. It was interesting to see how the evening would turn out.

The beginning showed potential of being the best day at the office so far.

I had the image of a listening session to be somewhat of people sitting quiet and taking notes. But no.

And of course at some point something like this had to happen.

Just kidding.

The speakers were turned quite up, but after listening to the album three times + other hard metal, my ears got used to it. Though it did feel like leaving a club after the music turned off.

It was a successful evening all in all. The journalists had fun, the band had fun and most importantly the staff had fun. And when this all is achieved you can expect more likes on Facebook and followers on Twitter. Because everything is defined by that in western society nowadays.

Additionally we learned a lot of Orange Goblin. For example they've been playing for over 16 years now, and they're pretty respected in the heavy metal scene. We also got to know where the band's name comes from. Apparently there are just way too many bands, which have 'black' in their name (like Black Sabbath and Rebecca Black) and someone of them likes Spider-Man? Pink Goblin sounds fairly good too, but for some reason the guitarist didn't agree.

I must warn you that the first song of the new album 'Red Tide Rising' is ROCK. It's so good that I wish Mary J. Blige would do an R n' B version of it. But unfortunately it's not publicly available yet for her to start practising it. However here's an old song of theirs.

Ps. The next morning at the office, someone was still having an after party.
